Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by a progressive decay of neurons that causes partial or complete loss of function of the organs in relation to the affected nerve areas. In common with all neurodegenerative diseases is the chronicity and, for this reason, have a very strong impact on the life not only of those who get sick, but of the entire family.
In these cases the multidisciplinary nature of rehabilitation interventions is fundamental, with protocols and methodologies o maintain as long as possible the functionality and cognitivism of the patient, improve the quality of life and reduce the stress of the caregiver.
The different neurological diseases have different symptoms. Parkinson's disease affects areas of motor control. Alzheimer’s diseaseinitially affects the areas of memory, then extends to almost the entire cerebral cortex. Motor neuron disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis involves a progressive paralysis of all voluntary and involuntary muscles.
Parkinson's disease is among the most frequent and, at our center, it’s possible to practice a treatment completely innovative: LSVT LOUD, useful for improving speech.
Speech therapy in adulthood is particularly concerned with dysphagia or swallowing disorder, dysarthria articulatory/respiratory/speech difficulties, dysphonia and aphasia acquired speech disorder following injury to brain structures.
Cognitive rehabilitation aims to stimulate specific cognitive functions such as language memory attention, planning in order to maintain residual abilities.
Occupational therapy is a type of intervention that can also include psycho-social programs essential to maintain the best quality of life for patients with neurodegenerative diseases as long as possible. This is achieved in particular by engaging the person in significant activities thereby increasing his perception of doing.
Psychological support to the patient and the caregiver are an inseparable combination in degenerative pathologies. Helping the person to process and accept the disease and provide strategies for managing anxiety, fear, distress remains one of the key moments in taking care of the patient and his family. It is a planned treatment system that treats diseases of psychic origin and aims to reduce or completely eliminate the symptoms of an emotional and affective nature. In addition, parent training treatments are carried out to support the patient’s rehabilitation treatment.
